Course overview

This six-month program develops future public service leaders by providing assessment, experiential learning and individual development opportunities. It is open to public service employees at the GS 7-11 levels who have high potential for leadership or have recently entered leadership positions.

Individuals should be nominated for this program based on their potential and motivation to complete all requirements and participate fully in all components of this intensive six-month program. ACE College Credit Recommendation Service reviewed.

Program components include:

  • Customized Leadership Development Plan
  • 360-degree feedback assessment
  • Three one-week residential training sessions
  • 30-day developmental assignment
  • Shadowing assignment
  • Senior-level management interviews

Week One - Orientation

This training session will help participants to:
        Understand various team development processes
        Understand personality type
        Interpret Leadership Effectiveness Inventory Feedback
        Identify Strengths and Developmental Needs
        Understand intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication
        Become more effective in their roles within their respective organizations
        Learn theories and strategies for effective leadership
        Develop a Personal Development Action Plan that addresses developmental needs

Assessments: Leadership Effectiveness Inventory (LEI) and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Week Two - Teams in Action –

This training session will help participants to:
        Enhance and refine the team development processes
        Identify creative and practical ways to resolve conflict
        Obtain tools and techniques to solve problems
        Learn the value diversity has in the workplace
        Develop the team Project Status Outline
        Assess team’s development

Assessments: Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument and the Kolb Learning Style Inventory

Week Three - Close-Out/Graduation

This training session will allow participants to:
        Demonstrate their key learnings by presenting on various competencies
        Gain strategies to transition back to the workplace
        Develop techniques to enhance their continued leadership
        Establish a process for expanding networks
        Understand the importance of continual learning
        Graduation
