The Smithsonian Institution Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) partnered with Graduate School USA (GSUSA) to create the organization’s Wage Leadership Development Program (WLDP). WLDP’s mission is to support all Federal Wage Service employees with leadership skills to lead from where they are, and to prepare them to advance in their career paths. OFMR determined that the program would initially focus on wage leaders and then roll-out to other wage service staff. The role of a wage leader is unusual in that the position has many responsibilities without corresponding authorities; thus, these leaders must rely on their own leadership skills to be effective. The WLDP program is designed to help each Federal Wage Service employee enhance their skill sets, including communications, strategic thinking, leadership, teamwork, and ethics.
GSUSA staff assisted in developing the five-month cohort training program, which included coaching, working with a mentor and courses such as Communications, Personal Awareness, Leading People, Business Acumen, Leading Change, and Building Coalitions. The training courses, which began in April 2018, were facilitated by local instructors at GSUSA’s campus and included 19 participants who went through a rigorous application process and assessment.
The participants graduated from the program in a ceremony held on August 28, 2018 at the National Museum of American History’s Warner Brothers Theater. Because of its success, OFMR will again partner with GSUSA to continue this valuable front-line leadership development program.
