## Overview

This three-day comprehensive course is an opportunity to review and improve your familiarity with essential grammar rules and techniques for efficient, effective editing. You’ll practice writing clear, correct sentences to ensure your readers can quickly and easily understand your message, and you’ll develop confidence in using correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling, verb forms, and pronouns. You’ll also survey the grammatical principles embedded in the Federal Plain Language Guidelines and identify valuable writing resources, including style guides and editing software/programs. Finally, you’ll define and practice a structured editing process to ensure a more complete, standardized, and thorough review of all your written communication.

## What you'll learn

- Discuss the role of correct grammar, usage, and mechanics in achieving clear, complete communication and projecting a professional, polished image.
- Differentiate between singular and plural subjects and verbs; apply rules for subject-verb agreement.
- Describe tools for energetic, concise writing: using active voice and avoiding hidden verbs.
- Review correct pronoun usage, including subject, object, and possessive pronouns, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.
- Diagnose and correct dangling and misplaced modifiers; define and practice following the rule of parallel structure.
- Understand basic sentence structure and conjunctions.
- Use punctuation and capitalization rules correctly.
- Use plain writing to improve clarity and readability.
- Describe the two-step editing process and explain why it’s important to use a structured process; identify editing resources such as the GPO Style Guide and online platforms.
