Managing Employee Trust

Description:

This one-day course is designed to introduce you to topics that will enhance your leadership expertise during periods of substantial change, and will also introduce you to a survey instrument on organizational communication and trust. One of the greatest challenges facing federal managers and leaders today is achieving organizational goals in a turbulent environment impacted by budget cuts, retirement of knowledgeable skilled workers, furloughs, as well as congressional and public skepticism. In order to accomplish organizational missions, federal managers and leaders must use every available asset, including the trust that bonds the entire workforce together. This will require managers and leaders to communicate honestly and with caring, and to perform their duties with competence and reliability. It has become increasingly important for managers in government agencies to adopt and employ effective leadership while adapting their management skills, rapid and fundamental change continues throughout the world and in virtually every aspect of our lives. Our organizations are no exception. Managers and leaders must bring sustainability to your agency by leading the way in making changes that will help the budgets and our citizens. This is not the time for complacency. The budget crisis for the past few years, and more recently, is getting people’s attention and increasing the sense of urgency. Leaders can no longer conduct business as usual. The primary force to carry on in these tumultuous times will be the leadership within the agencies. During this course, we will explore emerging ideas about organizational trust and the critical leadership skills associated with the new workplace. We will review “real life” scenarios of actions taken by federal managers in the past and analyze the manager’s thinking during the process. Each scenario will have two or three questions that will assist in delving into the manager’s leadership style. The course is designed for a broad audience including: team leaders, supervisors, managers, and executives. The course will focus on practical skills required of leaders who must contend with organizational turbulence due to budget and staff reductions, plus the increased requirements of performance budgeting.
