# SES Position Classification (Self-Paced)

Canonical URL: <https://www.graduateschool.edu/courses/ses-position-classification>

## Overview

The Senior Executive Service operates differently from positions classified under the General Schedule and Federal Wage System. Rather than assigning positions to specific grades, agencies establish and manage SES positions through an allocation-based process focused on executive-level responsibilities and organizational needs.

This short self-paced course provides a focused introduction to the principles and requirements that govern SES position classification. You will examine how SES positions are established, how agencies apply the biennial position-allocation cycle and functional criteria, and how SES positions differ from Senior Level and Scientific or Professional positions. You will also learn how to document an SES position and clearly describe the executive-level duties that support its designation.
