Video editing and motion graphics are rapidly growing industries. Producing compelling and meaningful videos or designs requires not only technical expertise in the necessary software, but also a strong grasp of workflow, awareness of both past and current visual styles and trends, and the ability to evaluate your own work as well as that of your collaborators.
You’ll learn the principles of motion graphics and best practices for taking a project from concept to completion, resulting in work worthy of inclusion in your demo reel to present to potential clients.
In this comprehensive portfolio course, you’ll develop several projects for your demo reel. It’s a self-directed, project-focused class designed to strengthen your skills while guiding you in producing original, high-quality work. Students receive extensive one-on-one feedback from the instructor, as well as targeted lessons tailored to the projects they are developing.
Each day, the instructor sets overarching goals and provides inspiration and direction, while much of the learning occurs through hands-on discovery shaped by each student’s personal objectives and creative vision. Assignments will be reviewed during individual and group critiques, after which you’ll make revisions and complete your work either in class or as homework (plan for additional work outside of class). The instructor remains available throughout the course to offer feedback and guidance both during and outside class hours.
Modern video editing has its origins in the work of film and television editors. With the rise of the internet and affordable video production equipment in the 1990s, skilled editors became more in demand than ever. Motion graphics—also called motion design or MoGraph—is a growing discipline rooted in animation and graphic design for film titles. Creating compelling visuals from live footage or animated graphics requires technical mastery of the software, efficient workflows, an understanding of visual trends past and present, the ability to critique work effectively, and above all, the skill to tell a captivating story to the viewer.
This course will prepare you for a career in both video editing and motion graphics. While they are distinct specialties, professionals in these fields often collaborate on the same projects and share similar workflows and software tools. In this instructor-led, in-depth course, you’ll gain the skills needed to create a strong portfolio and work as a professional in the video production industry.
