Principles of Supply Chain Management for Federal Employees

Principles of Supply Chain Management for Federal Employees is a two-day introductory course designed to help you understand how federal supply chains work in the real world. It’s built for people who support operations every day, including supply chain staff, property custodians, contracting professionals, and managers who need a stronger grasp of the systems behind procurement, inventory, and logistics.

This course does not assume you already have formal supply chain training. If you’re new to the field, shifting roles, or simply want to better understand how your work connects to the bigger picture, you’ll be in the right place.

What You’ll Learn

On Day One, you’ll build a strong foundation. You’ll learn the basics of supply chain management, including how goods, services, and information move from suppliers to end users. The course introduces core concepts such as planning, sourcing, delivery, returns, and risk management, then connects them to the federal environment.

You’ll also explore the regulations and agencies that shape federal supply chains, including FAR, DFARS, GSA, and DLA, along with key compliance requirements that make government operations different from the private sector.

The day also covers two essential operational areas:

  • Government property management (FAR 52.245-1): Learn the difference between Government-Furnished Property and Contractor-Acquired Property, who is responsible for what, and what can happen when property is not managed correctly.
  • Inventory management: Understand common inventory types, challenges like shortages and overstock, and practical methods used to improve balance and efficiency.

On Day Two, the focus shifts to execution. You’ll dive into logistics and transportation, including how supplies move through federal systems and the challenges agencies face, such as security requirements, aging fleets, coordination across multiple transport modes, and budget constraints.

A major part of the day includes a hands-on disaster response case study based on a hurricane scenario. You’ll work through real-world bottlenecks, evaluate solutions, and make tradeoff decisions similar to those federal logistics teams face during emergencies.

The course wraps up with a practical look at technology in federal supply chains, including RFID, ERP systems, AI, cloud platforms, blockchain, drones, and more. You’ll learn not only what these tools can do, but also what it takes to implement them in government settings where legacy systems, cybersecurity, and data quality matter.
