The terms leadership and management are often interchanged, and people don't think about what is the difference between being a leader and being a manager. And they actually each represent very distinct dimensions of organizational functions. And so the purpose of this module is to really give you a clear understanding of what leadership entails and what management entails.
Applied effectively, leadership and management can really help an organization drive innovation, foster teamwork, promote organizational growth, and generally achieve the mission of the organization. So what we're going to do first is we're going to go through some common topics and show you how leadership approaches that topic and how management approaches that topic. And the first topic that we're going to talk about is focus.
What is the focus of leadership? What is the focus of management? Leadership is really focused on achieving long-term objectives. Their focus is on inspiring and influencing individuals and teams within the organization to achieve the shared vision or common goals. So again, emphasis on long-term objectives.
Management's focus is much more on short-term goals and objectives. More of the day-to-day work centered on organizing, controlling resources, ensuring processes are being done correctly, and making sure tasks are being done. But the focus in management is really the efficient attainment of short-term goals and objectives.
The next topic is the role that leaders and managers play. So a leadership role is more about influence and inspiration, not so much about the use of authority. So often, really good leaders are recognized for the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide other people.
And I also want you to note that leadership is not always limited to formal positions. You will find that there are people in organizations at all levels who are actually demonstrating good leadership. Management, on the other hand, is more tied to formal positions of authority.
And the role that the manager plays is to be accountable for making sure that those day-to-day tasks are completed efficiently and that the resources are utilized effectively. The approach of leaders and managers is also different. So leadership's approach is very associated with transformational or charismatic approaches.
Leaders often lead by example, and they're often their approach to how they're interacting with people is to really empower their followers to reach their full potential. Management is more focused on the planning, organizing, and controlling of both resources and processes. So, where a leader is really, you know, empowering people and very charismatic and focused on transformation, management is really their approach to excel at problem solving, decision making, and ensuring that procedures are being followed.
The time frame is also different. As we sort of already discussed a little bit, leaders have a much longer-term perspective. They are really tasked with guiding the organization towards a long-term vision.
Management's time frame is much shorter. They are much more focused on the immediate goals and targets that have to be met within a much shorter time frame. The approaches to change and innovation are also different for leaders versus managers.
So leadership is really encouraging, and champions change and innovation. In fact, they are often the change agents who are driving that change and challenging the status quo. Management is more oriented towards maintaining stability and continuing efficiency.
And so they certainly play a role in change and support change, particularly in response to external pressure, but they are much more oriented towards maintaining stability and efficiency. And finally, there's even a difference between relationships. So leaders are really associated with building very strong and inspirational relationships with their followers.
There is a very strong emphasis from the leadership perspective to build trust with other people, to utilize their empathy and their emotional intelligence to establish and maintain really strong relationships with people. Management is more focused on task-oriented relationships. So their focus in relationship building with others is really to seek to ensure that those people complete their work efficiently and according to standards.
