Project Management Classes, Bootcamps & Certifications Near Me

Many people have heard the famous quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” This quote highlights the necessity of project managers or trained professionals tasked with guiding projects through the initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing phases to ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget.

Project managers are not only team leaders, they are trained professionals who can wield their leadership, communication, and project management skills to ensure that projects stay on track. Modern project management has its origins in the early 1900s, when there was a need to visualize and break down projects in factories and industrial work. The US government used early charts and project management techniques during both world wars, and these strategies and methods would become refined and improved when computers were widely adopted in the 1980s.

Today, project management is an in-demand and growing career that offers high-paying jobs to those with the right training and skills. Project managers can find work in a variety of industries, such as IT, architecture, design, manufacturing, publishing, and construction. Taking a project management class is a good way to stand out in a competitive job market and prepare for any certification exams.

Why is Learning Project Management Important?

A Project Manager is a skills-based role. Being a project manager is less about having the right degree--though many do pursue business or MBA degrees--and more about having the experience and leadership skills necessary to manage resources and motivate a group of people to complete a specific project by its deadline.

Project management skills can and should be learned. In a project management course, one can expect to learn about the five phases of project management, techniques for effective project management like Critical Path, Waterfall, and Agile, and software that one can use to coordinate with team members and keep track of the project’s costs and progress. One will also learn essential communication and leadership skills that are necessary for being a successful project manager.

Enrolling in a project management class can also help you learn about and prepare for the Project Management Institute’s Certified Association in Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exams. CAPM and PMP certifications are the most widely recognized and accepted certifications for entry-level and more experienced project managers, respectively. Before taking the exams, one must have gained a certain amount of project management experience or classroom hours.

Needless to say, Project Managers can provide the necessary organization and structure needed for many of L.A.'s production companies and entertainment agencies.

In Dallas, project management can lead to long-term career growth that keeps you on pace with the real-life growth this region is experiencing.

Project Management Classes Boston

One of Boston's most prominent industries is its educational network, filled with some of the nation's most reputable institutions, such as Harvard and MIT. These institutions run countless projects each year, all of which require attention to detail and organized, structured implementation. Managers may handle cross-campus initiatives or work with stakeholders in projects that improve campus engagement. Research labs are also known to hire Project Managers to keep everything moving forward and smoothly. In Boston, learning how to manage projects can not only be helpful but can also be your ticket to a meaningful and steady career.

Project Management Classes Miami

The city may be famous for its beaches and nightlife, but beyond the facade lies a professional haven for Project Managers, particularly due to the city's logistics and international trade industries. Being able to take the lead and stay organized is the kind of skill that sets professionals apart, and project management training provides that in full.

Project Management Classes Philadelphia

Philadelphia's workforce appreciates good project management that leads to positive results. When working in a city like Philly, learning tools like Microsoft Project and Scrum methodologies are skills that can be a real asset to companies as a whole, whether you work for one of Philly's major educational institutions or hospitals. If you want to stay competitive in Philly, project management is an ideal place to start.

Project Management Classes Phoenix

Phoenix is one of the fastest-growing cities on the West Coast, meaning there are growing opportunities for Project Managers. This is particularly true in Phoenix's finance and real estate industries. For instance, project management can help real estate companies by coordinating showings, tracking property development stages, and managing schedules and budgets. You can guarantee that where there's growth and success, there's a Project Manager working behind the scenes to make it happen.

What Kinds of Project Management Classes Are There?

There are many ways to learn project management, from MBA programs to taking a short online course. The kind of class you enroll in will determine important factors like what you learn, how you learn, and how long it will take you to learn project management.

Degree Program

Traditionally, project management has not been a major at degree-granting universities and colleges. Some universities are now offering online project management courses or programs to capitalize on the rise of project management positions in many industries. Some big-name schools have even created online bachelor’s programs with new designations, like Bachelor of Professional Studies.

Majoring in business as an undergraduate or seeking an MBA degree will allow you to pursue project management at the university or college level. Business courses will cover project planning and leadership skills, and it is common for someone seeking an MBA degree to get a concentration in project management, specifically.

Certificate Program

One can learn project management from a multi-week or multi-month MBA or business certificate program. These programs of study will be career-oriented and comprehensive, aiming to provide students with hands-on training so that they will be career-ready by the end of the course.

Certificate programs are career-oriented alternatives to degree programs that focus more narrowly on only the skills and concepts one will need for their career. A certificate program is different than a certification program, so if you’re looking to get CAPM or PMP certified (or to seek another form of project management certification), then you want a certification program, in particular.

Bootcamp

Bootcamps are accelerated, career-oriented classes that focus on one skill or concept. Students can expect that bootcamps will cover all of the information they’ll need to get started as a project manager within their own industry. As accelerated classes, one can often complete a bootcamp in less than a week, though a few long, six-hour class days should be expected.

Project management bootcamps are a great option for those looking to gain detailed insight into what it takes to be a project manager in a relatively short amount of time. Bootcamps will cover the essential skills, tools, and strategies that a project manager needs to manage resources, schedules, and team members successfully.

Individual Class

In addition to comprehensive project management classes, one can also find standalone classes geared towards specific experience levels. Usually, one will find these in a sequence where students can complete level 1 or a beginner class and then move on to level 2 or an intermediate or advanced class. This allows students to choose the class that best suits their skill level.

Taking a standalone class is a good way to get an introduction to project management, the key stages of a project, and different tools that project managers can use. One can usually take multiple individual classes to receive comprehensive training, so this option is highly flexible. Standalone classes are best for those who prefer a regularly paced class, unlike an accelerated bootcamp, and those who do not need additional training in business theories and skills, as one would find in a certificate program.

Consider the Training Format of a Class

One can find instructor-led project management classes that are taught in person or live online, as well as those that are offered as asynchronous online or on-demand classes. In-person education is still considered the best way to learn and retain information. In these classes, expert instructors will provide hands-on training and practice with essential project management tools, skills, and concepts.

Not everyone can attend an in-person class, bootcamp, and certificate program. Live online classes are a great alternative that should offer a similar level of guided, hands-on training. While live online classes are a good option for those who want or need to learn from home, some students find it difficult to remain engaged in an online class, meaning that online classes are best for self-motivated learners.

For those with busy, inflexible schedules who cannot attend either in-person or live online classes, consider taking an on-demand class. These are self-paced classes where students are given access to the course material and can move through it at their own speed. Very self-motivated and determined students can find success with this style of class, as some find it difficult to complete on-demand classes without external motivating factors like an instructor, other students, or hard deadlines.

Quick Guide to Finding the Best Project Management Class

  • Review course curriculum to determine concepts and skills covered: Ensure you’re learning the right concepts and skills by reviewing the curriculum to determine which topics the class covers and how. Taking a class that offers hands-on training with practice managing real-world projects is the best option.
  • Match training format to your learning needs: While many people learn best in person, that is not always desired by those who need or want to learn from home. Online learning is a great alternative to taking an in-person certificate program, bootcamp, or class, though one will need to make an extra effort to remain engaged and prevent oneself from getting distracted.
  • Make sure the class fits your schedule: In-person and live online classes require students to attend regularly scheduled class sessions. It can be hard for working professionals to find classes that fit their schedules; however, professional training centers often make classes more accessible with their part-time, evening, or weekend offerings.
  • Expensive classes are not always the best: Quality project management classes can be found in all training formats and for all skill levels. Bootcamps can be one of the best ways to learn skills quickly for less money. Be wary of overly expensive classes from big-name institutions, as you can often find more high-quality training for less money from other providers.
  • Read reviews and ranking articles: Reviews and ratings of classes are useful ways to see if past students found them useful. You can also find ranking articles that will compare classes from different educational providers to determine which is the best at various price points.
  • Overall, prioritize your needs: There are many project management classes and programs, and the best one will be the one that works best for you. Enroll in the class, bootcamp, or certificate program offered by a reputable organization that provides the curriculum, cost, training method, and schedule that works best for you.
